Interactivity Primer

Starting with Television Simulator 6.7.0, interactive features are finally here! Interactive menus and applications are now included in TVS and can be combined with existing OSDs, enabling the following new features:

  • Easier configuration of picture controls without needing to remember special keyboard shortcuts or entering the Graphical Setup
  • Interactive program guides in addition to the passive scrolling guides TVS has had since launch
  • Video-on-demand playback controlled by your remote’s media transport controls
  • Interactive games controlled by the remote

There are multiple menu systems to choose from, and there isn’t necessarily feature parity between them. You can choose a menu system by setting your OSD theme:

osd:
theme: <theme name> # theme for all components unless overridden
# ...
menu:
theme: <theme name>

The default menu theme is themed after a generic 1990s television set, and lets you control picture settings and launch 3rd party applications.

The Hypercom Cable theme isn’t modeled after any specific hardware or software. It’s an original set top box theme designed from scratch to look cool and help with the development of the interactivity framework. It includes Jellyfin and Plex media server integration for video-on-demand and music playback, the ability to run configured applications, browse program guide listings, and adjust picture and player settings.
